A locals guide to Cairns

A locals guide to Cairns

Cairns is a beautiful, tropical, coastal city at the northern end of Queensland.  It is sometimes referred to as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, as it has the shortest water crossing to the Barrier Reef by boat, seaplane or helicopter. It offers easy access to beaches and offers comfortable, warm weather throughout the year. So no wonder it is such a popular holiday destination for international tourists as well as interstate tourists.  Here are some great tips from Cairns locals on how to get the most out of your time in Cairns.

Eat

With an abundance of tropical fresh fruit and seafood, Cairns offers some great dining options.  Within the city any food you want is sure to be within walking distance. Outside the Pier shopping centre, facing the marina, are a selection of fantastic restaurants. Here you can enjoy fresh, local produce and spectacular views of the marina.

On a Friday or during the weekend, the local fruit and vegetable markets – "Rusty's Markets" – are a must see. Everything is cheap, fresh, local and smells amazing, and there's enough fruit samples to easily provide a free breakfast. There are also buskers everywhere for some casual entertainment, as well as a myriad of local boutique stores nearby.
