Combining a wide range of events across running, swimming & cycling, the 2017 Cairns Airport Adventure Festival has an event for everyone from serious triathletes to groups of friends who just want to join in for a bit of healthy fun.
From Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef to Cairns’ northern tourist town of Port Douglas the festival has a range of venues that will see athletes competing across the most beautiful landscapes that Far North Queensland has to offer.

Events
RRR Mountain Bike Challenge – 35km and 70km
The ‘rural, rainforest & reef’ mountain bike event is the longest running ‘point-to-point’ race in Australia and will feature over 400 local, interstate and international entrants racing through the iconic terrains of North Queensland.
Hekili Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge
Come on down to the famous Palm Cove beach where competitors will race from the starting line under the palms to Port Douglas’ Four Mile Beach in a range of ocean crafts including OC1s, 6’s and surf skis.
Quicksilver Reef Swim – 1.5km and 3km
This unique ocean swim will see competitors racing in the sparkling azure waters of the Great Barrier Reef off Green Island. Swimming over colourful coral gardens and sea-grass beds filled with grazing sea turtles this is sure to be a favourite with both the athletes and spectators who will enjoy the amazing scenery of a tropical island.
The Cairns Post Bright Night Run
This event is all about having fun! Join in or come and watch as people race along a glowing light-filled course on the Cairns Esplanade filled with lighting activations.
McDonalds IRONKIDS Cairns Triathlon
This kids only event is perfect for the mini-athletes to come and enjoy a fun and safe triathlon event on the Esplanade including a swim through the Esplanade Lagoon, ride along the Esplanade and run along the boardwalk to finish at Fogarty Park. This is the perfect introduction to the sport for any kids that want to come along and have a go, plus you’ll get a cool IRONKIDS t-shirt and go into the draw to win prizes.
Cairns Sport and Lifestyle Expo
Featuring a great selection of clothing, sports gear and food and drink stalls the expo is open for everyone to enjoy as well as for athletes to stock up on last minute equipment and talk to experts behind the brands.
Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns – 3.8km swim, 180km ride, 42.2km run
This is the pinnacle event of the festival – a gruelling full-distance triathlon featuring a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride along one of the most beautiful roads in Australia – the ‘Great Barrier Reef Drive’ – towards Port Douglas, capped off with a 42.2km run finishing in the heart of Cairns. Come and watch some of the world’s best triathletes compete in this monster event.
IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns – 1.9km swim, 90km ride, 21.1km run
The little brother of the main event this triathlon is comprised of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle leg and 21.1km run finishing on the Cairns Esplanade.
